I was invited by the lovely Keisha George, founder & editor of Wonita Christine to attend her first Women in Power Networking Luncheon as a special guest. The purpose of the event was to create a relaxed and inspirational environment for beginner female entrepreneurs, and it definitely delivered.
I was asked to attend half an hour before it was due to start to see the event from setup to finish, however, I had other arrangements and had to leave a little early. The event took place downstairs in Well Street Pizza which provided a cosy intimate environment and allowed everyone to feel included. Bee Bakare blessed us with the sweet soulful sounds of her voice paired with guitar which was a lovely touch and definitely added to the atmosphere.
We were offered wine, prosecco, water and soft drinks, played a few games which we had to work in pairs for which helped everyone get to know those sat around them and coincidently, I ended up on a table with other bloggers which also helped break the ice.
The Wonita Christine network had arranged for Author Lola Jaye to speak and give a motivational speech which reminded all of us not to give up on our craft. She also did a quick Q&A session, so told us she was a blogger turned writer and I asked the difference as I feel most of my writing is deeper than a lot of ‘airy fairy’ blogs out there but I don’t quite feel like I can call myself a writer. She told me I can, which was lovely, but I think I’ll stick to blogger for now lol.
There was a section of time allowed for attendees to take centre stage and share their stories, trials and tribulations, it also offered as a time for us all to give words of encouragement and tell opposing stories. It was bittersweet to hear some of the struggles of others and know that I’ve come a long way from feeling like they do. I kind of wish the time for this was longer as we only heard from a few people and by the time I felt confident enough to share my why?, time had run out.Next, it was time for lunch which was much needed. Due to the time I had to arrive and me being lazy that morning, I didn’t have time to eat breakfast before attending. Well Street Pizza offer a variety of pizzas which all looked lovely. I chose the Bufalina which is basically a margarita with buffalo mozzarella. The pizza was ok. Burnt in places and a little wet but I finished it so it couldn’t be that bad lol.
We played a few role-play games after lunch which had us in pairs again, one person played the Debby downer and the other an enthusiastic optimist. We had to swap sides and see how well we coped with each scenario and how we could do better. We also got a chance to mingle with everyone at this point and find out exactly what they do and swap details.
The event was sponsored by DJ Chest who donated her mixed CD and Cakes by Nadia who obviously donated yummy cupcakes which I’m never mad at!
This was my first women empowerment event and I’m really glad that Keisha invited me. It was lovely to meet women of all ages, different areas who I would never normally meet and get a chance to learn from them and hear different perspectives. Well done Keisha! I hope to attend the next and continue to support women who are trying to make a change in our community.
