Inexpensive and accessible canteen style dining, The Japanese Canteen is EVERYTHING!
This is the kind of place that you love to go to and eat but hate to share for fear of it blowing up and becoming the next ‘Nandos / Wagamama / Bird’.
The Japanese Canteen really is a low-key hidden gem and I want it to stay that way!
Hands down the best Teriyaki chicken & salmon I have ever tasted! The produce is fresh, you can see and taste the difference to regular chain restaurants, the staff are attentive and the prices are super cheap! What more could you want?
The dining style is exactly what it says on the tin, canteen style, however, the branch I visited (Bethnal Green) seemed to me just like a normal no thrills restaurant rather than the usual Wagamama style canteen dining.
The KFC (Korean fried chicken) is coated in a sriracha sauce but isn’t too hot – I hate spicy food and it was fine for me!
The Teriyaki chicken and rice also comes with a dry slaw in a large bowl that can fill even the hungriest of diners. The teriyaki sauce is the perfect balance between sweet and strong and they don’t hold back on it!
The Japanese Canteen rose to the top of my favourite places to eat the very first time I tried it. Everything was perfect! Typing this now has me about to schedule my next visit it’s THAT good.
All main dishes come with steamed rice and either Asian slaw, sesame bean shoots or pickles and range in price from £7.95 to £10.95 AND THERE’S NO ADDED SERVICE CHARGE! (At the time of writing)
Do me a favour, the next time you fancy a chicken katsu curry, steamed bun or even KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), head on over to The Japanese Canteen and eat somewhere that takes pride in making sure your food is the best quality that it can be!
I don’t often tell people to take my word on restaurant recommendations because everyone is different but this place is definitely a must try!
